US Citizens do not need a passport to enter Canada by car; however, as of January 31, 2008, on your return to the US you will be asked to present Government issued photo-ID as well as proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, passport, certificate of citizenship or naturalization. If you are a permanent resident of the U.S., you should bring your Permanent Resident Card (i.e. green card) with you.
U.S. citizens returning to the U.S. from Canada by car are currently exempt from passport requirements. A passport is required if you are flying to the US. For more information visit www.travel.state.gov or www.cbsa.gc.ca.
