Ask anyone who works in tourism what makes Niagara-on-the-Lake special in the off-season, and you may hear the usual answers: it's quieter, there are fewer people. What I hear is something a little different.

"I've got more of Niagara-on-the-Lake to myself."

There is a different side of Niagara-on-the-Lake that reveals itself as the seasons change. The vineyards take on a new character, which allows for more time for a conversation with a winemaker. Restaurants become places to settle into rather than simply stop at, maybe have that dessert with coffee after all. The destination hasn't become less interesting; it has become more intimate. There is time to experience it differently.

The Luxury of Time

Time may be one of the greatest luxuries we have when we travel. We spend so much of everyday watching the clock, whether it’s getting somewhere, seeing someone, or doing something, we don’t always get to have time to just BE. A getaway should feel different in every aspect, and Niagara-on-the-Lake's unhurried season offers just that. Permission to just BE.

The Stay: The Bed & Breakfast Way

Bed and Breakfast travel has been what Niagara-on-the-Lake has been known for for decades. There is something charming about arriving somewhere where someone opens the door, welcomes you in, shows you to your room, answers your questions and, quite often, tells you things that only someone who lives here knows.

No two bed and breakfasts are alike. Some are historic homes with stories woven into their walls. Some are surrounded by vineyards and countryside. Some are tucked close to the Heritage District, making it easy to leave the car behind and explore on foot. Some are grand, some are intimate, some are romantic, some feel like a country retreat, some may even have a ghost or two. The house is only part of the story.

We notice more when we are in the state of “BEING” – we notice the people. The people who live here, who cook here, who pour the wine, run the shops, tend the gardens and open the doors of the places we enter. Because behind every good stay, there is a person.

The People Behind the Stay

That person is your Innkeeper. Yes, a bed and breakfast is someone's home, but by no means is it like visiting grandma’s house. It means visiting someone who wants to share their home with the world and brag about the town they live in and love. The house has a history, the rooms have character, breakfast is prepared with a little extra thought, and the hosts definitely have stories to tell.

And while the room may be beautiful, the breakfast memorable and the location exactly what you were looking for, it is often the human connection that turns a place to stay into part of the story you take home.

Your innkeeper may ask what brings you to town, what you have planned, if anything, and then comes the question that can change the entire day: “Have you been here before?"

That's when the local secrets start to come out.

Innkeepers: The Best Concierge in Town

There is plenty of information available to travellers today. Niagara-on-the-Lake has so much to discover, and there are countless ways to find ideas for where to go, what to see and what to experience. But an innkeeper might suggest the winery they frequent themselves, the restaurant where they can rhyme off the entire menu, the shop they think you'll love, or the walking route that has the best sunrise. These aren't recommendations designed to fill an itinerary, they are offered because someone knows the destination and wants you to experience the magic as well. This is perhaps the greatest gift of staying somewhere rather than simply visiting. You have the best tour guide in town: a local!

Breakfast Is Part of the Stay

And then there is breakfast. *sigh*

Often homemade, always thoughtfully prepared and perhaps something you've never taken the time to make for yourself at home. It is all about the small details: homemade jam, a warm loaf of bread, coffee poured just when you need another cup. Perhaps you find yourself chatting with other guests, sharing a funny story with your innkeeper, or simply sitting with your coffee and enjoying the rare luxury of having nowhere else to be. Breakfast sets the tone for the day; it's the kind of hospitality that makes you want to linger just a little longer and, perhaps, ask for the recipe before you leave.

The Things You Remember

When we think about travel memories, we often remember the big things – the wine, the meal, the theatre, the beautiful view. But sometimes the memories that stay with us are much smaller. The innkeeper who recommended a bottle of wine we wouldn't have chosen, the breakfast we still talk about, the conversation that changed our plans for the afternoon, the feeling of being welcomed somewhere. Those moments don't always make it onto social media. They are the moments that only you can experience your way, with that person who came along for the ride.

Don’t Just Come for the Day

Niagara-on-the-Lake has always been a destination worth discovering, and there is something special about experiencing it when the pace slows and there is room to explore on your own terms. So come for the wine, the food, the theatre, the shops, the heritage, the countryside and the beauty of wine country. But don't simply come for the day, come for the stay!

Because sometimes experiencing Niagara-on-the-Lake isn't about seeing more. It's about slowing down enough to truly experience it. That is the art of staying.
